A software engineer booked a career coaching call with me recently. His goal?
He wanted help finding a mentor.
That’s when I hit him with a question that threw him off:
“Why you?”
He paused. Confused. So I asked again:
“Why should that person mentor you?”
They don’t get paid, they’re probably busy, and even if they like helping people, they’ve been burned before.
You’re asking someone to take time out of their day, invest emotional and mental energy into you, and possibly be disappointed if you flake out, ignore their advice, or ghost them once you get what you want.
Put yourself in their shoes. Would you mentor a random person who cold DMed you asking for help for free? No shot.
So if you're going to earn a mentor, it starts with one question:
Why should they pick you over anyone else who might reach out?
You’re not the only one who thinks their experience is valuable, others do too. Which means you’re not the only one reaching out.
And that’s where most people blow it, while they try to beg their way into mentorship.
My approach is the opposite, I want you to turn yourself into a magnet.
The Real Way to Get a Mentor:
Be someone worth mentoring.
Sounds harsh? Maybe.
But it’s what actually works.
If you're sharp, show high growth potential, and people see you're a workhorse, mentors will slowly start to gravitate toward you. They’ll want to be associated with your rise and feel invested in your success.
I learned this from watching my father, who climbed his way up to Senior IT Director.
I applied the same principles when I started out in recruiting, and it worked to a tee.
